on the 27th of july 1973, the architect lanfranco bombelli tiravanti opened the entrance doors of galeria cadaqués under a special set of circumstances. peter g. harnden, his friend and working partner, had passed away. due to religious reasons, he could only be buried in a part of the cemetery that was being used as a flower dump. bombelli set out to restore the area in order to dignify his friend’s memory.
he decided to edit the portfolio one, a folder with 12 screenprints from different artists related to cadaqués. he cleaned up and painted an area of the old anchovy factory that was being used as a warehouse and presented the portfolio one. the proposal was a resounding success: he collected all the funds for the restoration of the cemetery and the galeria cadaqués was spontaneously born.
architect and gallery owner, bombelli converted that space in a place of artistic confluences from all around the world. the gallery became one of the most active focusses of the catalan scene of that period. many important artists, such as marcel duchamp, richard hamilton, joseph beuys, john cage, david hockney, jasper johns or dieter roth, among others, made their first solo exhibition in spain in his gallery. bombelli became a developer of the avant-guard.
on the 31 august 1997, bombelli closed the doors of the gallery. he had presented the work of 114 artists, out of whom 67 exhibited for the first time on spanish territory and 18 of them made their first solo exhibition in absolute terms.
in 2003, huc malla, a young and passionate collector, trained at the sotheby’s institute of london, reopened the gallery with the acquiescence of bombelli under the name galeria cadaqués dos. malla keeps up the historical avant-guard spirit and the publishing tradition of bombelli’s era and continues an exhibition line that stands up for qualitiy and commitment towards contemporary art. he works with new catalan and international artists such as tacita dean, jake & dinos chapman, alfredo jaar, laura white, antoine laval, bruce nauman, perejaume or jordi colomer, among others, and collaborates with major museums and cultural institutions, both on a national and international level.
in 2013, on the occasion of the 40th aniversary of the gallery, the name galeria cadaqués dos became galeria cadaqués – huc malla.
